I. Recognize the reality and danger of spiritual drift

(A) Familiarity with the truth

(B) Unrepentant sin

II. How do we move once again towards Christ?

(A) By remembering our great salvation daily

“We will never stand in awe of being loved by God until we reckon with the seriousness of our sin and the justice of his wrath against us.” – John Piper

(B) By cherishing Christ and His Word

“It would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” — CS Lewis

Questions for Discussion/Application:

  • Consider taking time to read Hebrews 2:1-4 out loud. What initial insights or observations of the text do you have?
  • In what ways do you think we, like the original audience, can be vulnerable to spiritual drift?
  • The author exhorted the original readers to “pay much closer attention” to what they had heard. What they needed to pay much closer attention to was the gospel. How can we as Christians be vulnerable to being so familiar with the gospel, they we neglect to contemplate it, meditate upon it, and celebrate it?
  • What are some things we can do, as Jeremy said, to make sure we are  “remembering the gospel daily”?
  • What practices have you found helpful to your own soul in remembering the gospel daily?
  • Consider take time to pray. Ask the Lord that he would help us to not neglect the gospel, but rather to meditate upon it daily, rejoice in it, and live in the good of it. Pray also that the Lord would protect us from spiritual drift.
