I. Remember God’s grace
- The Israelites remember the origin of their story. This is part of our story as well.
- As we reflect on redemptive history, it can also help us to connect with our own personal story of redemption as well.
- Here in Nehemiah 9, verse 7, they say together ‘you are the Lord, the God who chose Abram.’ Ephesians 1 says that we, brothers and sisters in Christ have been chosen in Christ from before the foundation of the world.
- Even before you or I were even born beloved, you had already been chosen in Christ. The mercy of God towards you has taken hold of you even before you were even born or I was even born. That’s cause for us to praise the Lord, because when we read in Philippians one that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.
II. Remember our wickedness
Nehemiah 9:16–17 [16] “But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. [17] They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. (ESV)
III. Remember God’s faithfulness.
Nehemiah 9:30–31 [30] Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. [31] Nevertheless, in your great mercies you did not make an end of them or forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God. (ESV)
Questions for Discussion/Application:
- Consider taking time to read Nehemiah 9:1-38 out loud. What initial insights or observations of the text do you have?
- Recall together — how has God been merciful and gracious to you in both your salvation and to you throughout your Christian life as well?
- How can remembering how we have disobeyed and rebelled against God actually be a means of grace to us?
- Consider – how was God faithful to His people in the Old Testament? How has he been faithful to you as well.
- Consider taking time to pray, thanking God for His lavish grace and faithfulness.
