I. Jesus has made a way for us to God, so let us draw near to Him

“The grace of God is love freely shown towards guilty sinners, contrary to their merit and indeed in defiance of their demerit. It is God showing goodness to persons who deserve only severity and had no reason to expect anything but severity…It is surely clear that, once a person is convinced that his state and need are as described (above), the New Testament gospel of grace cannot but sweep him off his feet with wonder and joy. For it tells how our Judge has become our Savior.” JI Packer

“Justification is the truly dramatic transition from the state of a condemned criminal awaiting a terrible sentence to that of an heir awaiting a fabulous inheritance.” JI Packer

II. Jesus is faithful, so let us hold fast our hope

III. Jesus will come again, so let us love and encourage one another

How do we “stir one another up to love and good works”?

1. Maintain the priority of gathering for worship and fellowship

“God is the highest good of the reasonable creature. The enjoyment of Him is our proper; and is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Better than fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of any, or all earthly friends. These are but shadows; they enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean.” Jonathan Edwards

2. Encourage one another, more than you think is necessary!

Questions for Discussion/Application:

  • Consider taking time to read Hebrews 10:19-25 out loud. What initial insights or observations of the text do you have?
  • Jeremy reminded us, “because of what Christ has done, we who were once guilty and condemned are now free and welcomed into God’s presence.” How does that reminder encourage and strengthen you?
  • What does it mean to draw near to the Lord “with a true heart in full assurance of faith”?
  • Re-read the first JI Packer quote in this Sermon Recap. How does that quote encourage you?
  • What does it look like practically for us as believers to “maintain the priority of gathering for worship and fellowship”?
  • How can we grow in the area of encouraging one another?
  • Consider taking time to pray, asking God to help us to more fully rejoice in His grace. Let’s pray also that God would help us to be faithful to encourage one another and to stir one another up to love and good deeds
