Main Theme: When the Lord is my shepherd, I shall be fully satisfied.

“The LORD is my shepherd (verse 1)”

“I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11).”

“The Lord is MY SHEPHERD (verse 1)”

”I am the good shepherd.  I know my own and my own know me…My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (John 10:14,27).”

“I shall not want (verse 1)”

“Nothing less than Christ can satisfy, and when you find Him, nothing more could be desired.”  — Stephen Charnok

“From Pole to Pole let others roam, and search in vain for bliss; my soul is satisfied at home, the Lord my portion is.”  — John Newton

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters, He restores my soul (verse 2-3a)”

“He leads me in the paths of righteousness, for His name’s sake (verse 3b)”

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me (verse 4a)”

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).”

“The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me (Hebrews 13:6)?”

“Your rod and your staff, they comfort me(verse 4b)”

  • The Rod speaks of His discipline
  • The Staff speaks of His protection and provision

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies (verse 5a)”

“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows (verse 5b)”

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life (verse 6a)”

“And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever (verse 6b)”

“And night will be no more.  They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever (Revelation 22:5).”

Application

  1. Is the Lord your shepherd?

“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”  John 1:12

“Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”  Rev. 22:17

  1. If the Lord is your Shepherd:

“He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also graciously give us all things?  Romans 8:32

Father I know that all my life is portioned out for me

The changes that are sure to come I do not fear to see

I ask Thee for a present mind intent on pleasing Thee.

There are briers besetting every path that call for patient care

There is a cross in every lot, and an earnest need for prayer

But a lowly heart that leans on Thee is happy anywhere.

Anna Waring, 1850, South Wales
