III. Faith grows through testing and yields blessing (verses 17-22)

“The testing of your faith produces steadfastness” — James 1:3

IV. Application

The key to living by faith: considering Him who promised to be faithful (verse 11)

1. Believe the Word!

Psalm 19:7–11
[7] The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;
[8] the precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
[9] the fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the LORD are true,
and righteous altogether.
[10] More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
[11] Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward. (ESV)

2. Obey the Word and Trust Him

Questions for Discussion/Application:

  • Consider taking time to read Hebrews Hebrews 11:8-22 out loud. What initial insights or observations of the text do you have?
  • Considering point #1, what is the connection between faith and trusting obedience. How does faith fuel trusting obedience?
  • How is the notion of faith-fueled obedience seen in verses 8-22 as well as in the whole of chapter 11?
  • Considering point #2, what is the connection between faith and hope. How does faith produce hope? How did Abraham and Sarah model “enduring hope.”
  • Jeremy said, “Faith is the vehicle that carries us along the pathway to heaven.” How do we see this borne out in the lives of the saints in Hebrews 11. How have you seen this truth born out in the lives  of people you know or in history?
  • Considering point #3, how does faith grow in the fires of affliction and testing? How has your own faith grown in the trials you have faced?
  • How would you like to grow in this area of faith?
  • Consider taking time to pray, asking God to help us to as we were encouraged at the end of the message on Sunday to (A) “believe the word” and to (B) “obey the word and trust Him.”
